More Than a Roof
What does "home" actually give us? Most people think it's a roof.
I think it's something deeper ...
When I was growing up, housing wasn't something I could count on.
There were years of moving from one unstable situation to the next.
Crappy rental to crappy rental.
Packing. Unpacking. Starting over.
Even after we were no longer in a tent, instability had a way of following us.
The address changed before the mindset did.
It wasn't until college that I felt something different.
For the first time, I felt a sense of control over my own path.
The freedom to make my own choices came with pressure, but it also came with possibility. I had already promised myself I would never live that way again.
Recently, I joined The Happy Customer Channel podcast to discuss homelessness, housing insecurity, and what people often misunderstand about both.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that housing is simply about shelter.
When people have a stable place to call home, they can begin making decisions about their future instead of spending every day reacting to a crisis. My story is just one example of that truth.
I'd love to hear from others:

The work we do in housing isn't just about buildings.
It's about creating the conditions for people to imagine a different future and then giving them the opportunity to build it.
