Go Ask the Question
As Raj Chetty wrapped up his keynote, I turned to my Hype Squad and said: “I wonder how much private capital it would take to scale these mobility strategies.”
They didn’t let the thought end there.
“Why are you wondering? Go up and ask him.”
Insert strong elbow nudging sounds.
Raj Chetty had just finished explaining research showing:
- proximity to higher-income social networks can influence opportunity,
- how Seattle’s housing navigator pilot translates into higher earnings for children later in life, and
- the strongest predictors of economic mobility.
My brain was ... yes ... a word cloud.
Mobility > Opportunity > Networks > Investment > Self Sufficiency
And underneath all of it, one question kept getting louder:
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲?
Anyone else have a "stop you in your tracks" moment at the NAHRO Symposium this week?
