Government Issued Cheese

Let's talk about government issued cheese. Growing up, I swear we ate it with every meal, for every week, for what felt like 80 million years. I know that’s not possible but whew.

That cheese wasn't just a part of the pantry - it was a reminder of hardship, and even smacked of humiliation and resentment.

But that's the odd thing about trauma and hardships - they can blur the details. Timelines, facts, everything gets mixed up as we rewire ourselves to survive.

In my work with individuals facing housing instability, I’m reminded of how each person rewires in their own way.

Understanding that journey is key to serving and supporting.

Housers, let’s remember that behind every box we check, every form we process, and every compliance measure we uphold, there are real lives.

P.S. Sadly, this photo is not how the cheese looked or tasted.
