Ubering? Who would have predicted a business model of riding in strangers' cars would bring in more than $1 billion in annual revenue?

Road warriors, what are your safety tips? 🔔🔔 Are you a taxi or uber person? Does it depend on what city you are in? Lately I’ve had to take ubers much later at night due to flight delays and sometimes even at midnight.

Here’s what I’ve discovered:

Yes, read all the standard safety tips like license plate verifications and monitoring routes. But as a female here are a few others:

📱Share your ride details with someone via the messaging feature.

☎️Talk on your phone describing where you are, what uber make/model you are in, how long the trip is, and the more details shared, the better. Even if it’s late, pretend to talk on the phone sharing details. Or tell your driver that you are sharing your estimated arrival with someone who is waiting for you.

📸Take photos of your location and send them out loud so your driver knows you are sharing with friends.

🛎Use situational awareness and coping skills to take control of the ride situation. Plan reactions and responses. Follow your intuition if something starts to “feel off”.

Once I had a driver show me their pepper spray and a machete. It was their own protection tool but who yields a machete these days? Clearly, I said “oh hey, we are here and close enough” as I motioned to stop and then hopped out.

What else have you seen, or learned?
