When The Roof Falls In
A tree fell on our house yesterday. Like. On. It.
Loud, jarring, and completely out of our control. This 5am wake up came threatening the very area over our bedrooms.
Weโre safe. Weโve got insurance and a support network. But when something shakes your sense of safety, everything goes blurry ..
I experienced it every single day as a kid - when I was homeless.
Now, as a leader in the affordable housing space, I carry this experience into how I train and support our staff. I remind them:
Every caller might be someone whose โproverbial houseโ just got hit.
Lead with warmth - even when you're busy.
Pause before saying no - there might be another way.
โก๏ธ Choose compassion ๐ธ๐ช๐ต๐ฉ protocol - people remember how you made them feel, long after the paperwork is processed.
Whether theyโre stuck on a waitlist, lost in a maze of paperwork, or caught in the system - sometimes the simplest act of kindness is what helps someone hold on.
Now, to log off early and make sure the tarps are secure. Or QC these contractors.
