Leadership on the Mat
Everyone talks about resilience. Few people willingly sign up for it.
Four people in my family train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but it’s my daughter’s journey that is most impressive.
Because she didn’t walk into a level playing field.
She walked into a gap.
In many tournaments, there simply aren’t enough female competitors to neatly separate by age and experience. So divisions get blended. And as one of the newest on the mat, she’s often competing above her level.
And still. She shows up.
She’s walked off the mat defeated.
She’s stood on the podium with medals.
She’s figured out:
- Her triangle choke is stronger than most
- But pacing herself early in a match is where growth lives
Resilience isn’t an overnight process.
It's a daily decision to keep going and put in the reps.
Much like leadership. Especially when you don’t neatly “fit” the mold.
- You take losses in public
- Navigate constant risks
- Build against the current
- Pioneer without guarantees
Knowing exactly what each fight is there to teach you.
Stepping onto the mat when conditions aren't perfect and learning in real time.
Housers, keep getting on the mat!
