Boards Set the Direction
I got a call last week to be a reference for an Executive Director stepping into a new role at a Housing Authority. In our industry, that's not unusual. But the board asked me: "๐๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฌ๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐๐ฐ ๐๐ฑ๐๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ข๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ, ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐?"
I paused. Not because I didn't have an answer.
I had so many things to say.
I realized the board asked me the wrong question.
The right question is "๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐๐จ ๐ฐ๐, ๐๐ฌ ๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ซ๐, ๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฏ๐ ๐๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐
๐๐?"
Most boards never have that conversation.
They have a budget, a set of compliance rules and they manage to those things. They operate a system. A shared strategy underneath it is missing.
A new Executive Director can survive in those conditions, but she certainly wonโt thrive in it.

When a board picks a strategy like this, the governance comes naturally.
The ED is set up for success because she now knows which way the board is going.
This is the conversation I'll be having at two gatherings next month:

๐ National Leased Housing Association ยท June 16โ18
If you serve on a housing board, or advise one, come find me.
I want to know what you believe your strategy and governance is setting.
