Boards Set the Direction

I got a call last week to be a reference for an Executive Director stepping into a new role at a Housing Authority. In our industry, that's not unusual. But the board asked me: "๐ˆ๐Ÿ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ญ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐ž๐ฐ ๐„๐ฑ๐ž๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ข๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐œ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ, ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ข๐ญ ๐›๐ž?"

I paused. Not because I didn't have an answer.
I had so many things to say.

I realized the board asked me the wrong question.

The right question is "๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐๐จ ๐ฐ๐ž, ๐š๐ฌ ๐š ๐›๐จ๐š๐ซ๐, ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ฏ๐ž ๐š๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ข๐ฌ ๐…๐Ž๐‘?"

Most boards never have that conversation.
They have a budget, a set of compliance rules and they manage to those things. They operate a system. A shared strategy underneath it is missing.

A new Executive Director can survive in those conditions, but she certainly wonโ€™t thrive in it.

When a board picks a strategy like this, the governance comes naturally.
The ED is set up for success because she now knows which way the board is going.

This is the conversation I'll be having at two gatherings next month:
๐Ÿ“ PHADA ยท June 10โ€“13
๐Ÿ“ National Leased Housing Association ยท June 16โ€“18

If you serve on a housing board, or advise one, come find me.

I want to know what you believe your strategy and governance is setting.
