As a manager, and a mom…
My oldest landed in Warsaw, Poland over the weekend to volunteer with relief efforts for Ukrainian refugees. Making all the connections by himself, literally navigating planes, trains, metros, and ubers.
As I monitored the first part of this travel journey, I learned a few management lessons:
- as a manager and mom, I like the details ... but sometimes, you have to let go to create a space for everyone to thrive
- there are risks that are just worth it and often knowing how to navigate those risks can be instinctual, and/OR they have to be learned
- surround yourself with people who can leap AND those who can analyze for caution; both types are needed
- operating a business can feel like parenting sometimes; one moment it's sheer pride and then the next second you're teeth clinched with a nervous smile
- this child (ahem, mini adult) has been difficult to raise since we brought him home from the hospital, but his passion and path are unique. Much like working in the affordable housing industry, it's different but worth every challenging step.
Let's do this Monday! There's a lot of need in this world and we can make an impact.
